When you buy a new radiator, especially if it’s one of the thousands we have on offer at Trade Radiators, you expect that once it arrives, you can get it hung on the wall and hooked up to your heating system in no time at all.
In 99% of cases, that’s exactly what happens. In the rare 1%, it can be that you need a radiator tail extension. Luckily, we have a range to help complete the installation. Shop the range and find the right extensions for your radiator.
Why would someone need radiator tail extensions?
Someone would need a radiator tail extension when their radiator cannot attach securely to the pipework.
The industry standard in the UK for a radiator connection is 15mm, as that is the most common pipe width. In some cases, pipework in a space may not fit that standard. This is usually due to a room having older pipework, a room having microbore pipes which average 8mm-10mm or pipes being too low to the ground.
These tail extensions provide a simple solution that is cost-effective and avoids any work needing to be carried out on pipes.
How do I know if I need a radiator tail extension?
Like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, you’ll know you need one if your radiator can’t snuggly fit on top of your pipes. Considering how much it would cost to have a plumber come and re-pipe a wall, getting a tail extension for less than £10 seems like a much better idea.
What material are tail extensions made of?
Radiator tail extensions are made from brass and tend to have a polished chrome finish. The colour shouldn’t have any impact on the colour of your pipe sleeves and valves as the extension sits in the same place as your valve body.
What sizes do radiator tail extensions come in?
The range we currently have comes in the following sizes:
- 15mm
- 20mm
- 30mm
- 40mm
- 45-70mm
- 50mm
Do I need to buy a new valve when purchasing a tail extension?
You shouldn’t need to get a new valve as a tail extension aims to complete the connection. In very rare cases where the extension still doesn’t quite make the connection as desired, you may want to get a radiator reducer to help measurements match up.
What brands make high-quality radiator tail extensions?
Like many of the radiator accessories we have on-site, we find West to be a reputable brand who make great quality tail extensions. They are incredibly reliable at helping you make those adjustments so that a radiator will fit between existing pipework as it should.
Do I need anything else for my radiator?
To ensure a complete radiator installation has everything you need, our range of radiator accessories will help you find everything you need for any room.
