There’s something deeply comforting about walking into a warm room on a cold day and if you’ve got a cat, chances are they’ve already found the toastiest spot in the house. Whether it’s stretched out in front of a radiator, curled up on a nearby windowsill, or lounging with a paw gently resting on the warm metal, cats instinctively gravitate toward heat.

To put it simply, cats are heat-seeking missiles wrapped in fur.

Domestic cats evolved from desert-dwelling ancestors, which explains why they love warm environments and can often be found basking in any patch of sunlight available. Do I need a radiator bed for my cat?

You don't necessarily need to get an actual radiator bed. While there are plenty of radiator beds available on the market, many cats will choose their own spot next to the heat. Some prefer baskets, others a folded blanket near the pipes. And some simply like to lie sprawled along the warm wall beneath the radiator.

If your cat already has a preferred perch, there’s no need to rush out and buy a radiator bed. In fact, many cats ignore these beds altogether in favour of a spot they’ve chosen themselves. How to make radiators safe and comfortable for cats

If your cat loves to hang around the radiator, it’s worth doing a quick safety check. Most modern radiators are perfectly safe to touch, even when they’re on full blast, but here are a few practical tips to make the space cat-friendly:

1. Check for sharp edges or exposed valves

Some older radiators or thermostatic radiator valves may have sharp or protruding parts. Make sure there’s nothing that could catch a tail or claw, especially if your cat likes to rub up against the radiator or hop onto furniture nearby.

2. Avoid excessive heat

Radiators that get extremely hot can be uncomfortable or even risky for cats who enjoy close contact. If you’re concerned, you can adjust the thermostat or install a thermostatic radiator valve to better control the temperature.

3. Keep the area clean

Radiators attract dust, which can gather quickly around pipes and behind the unit. Cats who like to sleep near or under the radiator might end up with dirty fur, or worse, sneeze fits. Give your radiators a quick dust or hoover regularly to keep the area fresh.

Should I be worried about cat hair in my radiator?
