Column radiators combine the elegance of traditional Victorian and Edwardian heating with the performance of modern central heating systems. Available in 2, 3 and 4 column configurations, vertical and horizontal orientations, and an extensive range of finishes from classic white to raw metal, they are one of the most versatile radiator styles on the market.

Why Choose a Column Radiator?
Unlike a standard Type 22 panel radiator, a column radiator generates heat through a series of vertical tubes, creating a larger surface area that distributes warmth more evenly throughout a room. The multi-column design promotes natural convection — meaning the radiator continues to radiate heat as hot water circulates through each section — making them particularly well-suited to modern low-temperature systems such as heat pumps and condensing boilers.
Beyond performance, their distinctive profile suits a broad range of interiors. Whether you are restoring a period property, furnishing a contemporary new build, or somewhere in between, column radiators work equally well alongside Victorian cornicing and exposed brick as they do with polished concrete and minimal décor. Available in both horizontal and vertical orientations, they can be installed on almost any wall regardless of available space.
Choosing Between 2, 3 and 4 Column Radiators
The column count refers to the depth of the unit, which directly determines its BTU heat output. Choosing the right configuration for your room is straightforward:
2 Column Radiators
With a slim profile of approximately 65mm deep, 2 column radiators are ideal for hallways, behind doors, or tighter spaces where wall depth is limited. They offer a refined, understated look without compromising on warmth in smaller rooms. Browse 2 column radiators
3 Column Radiators
Our most popular configuration. 3 column radiators balance heat output and wall projection, making them a versatile choice for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and kitchens. Browse 3 column radiators
4 Column Radiators
For larger rooms with high ceilings, poor insulation, or significant glazing, a 4 column radiator provides the additional depth needed to hit the required BTU output without an oversized width. Maximum output, considered footprint.
Not sure which output you need? Use our BTU calculator to match the right radiator to your room dimensions before you buy.

Vertical Column Radiators
For rooms with limited horizontal wall space — narrow alcoves, the wall between two windows, galley kitchens or landings — vertical column radiators make efficient use of height without sacrificing heat output. The Reina Hedingham and Nordic Oslo vertical ranges are our best sellers in this configuration, available in multiple column counts and finishes to suit both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Materials and Finishes
Column radiators are available in mild steel, aluminium and cast iron, each with different performance characteristics:
- Mild steel is the most common material, offering a good balance of heat-up time, BTU output and cost. The majority of our range is mild steel.
- Aluminium heats up faster than steel and is highly efficient with low-temperature central heating systems, making it an excellent choice alongside heat pumps. Browse aluminium column radiators
- Cast iron retains heat for longer periods after the boiler cycles off — well-suited to period properties and rooms where sustained background warmth is important.
Standard finish options across most ranges include white (RAL 9016), anthracite (RAL 7016) and raw metal lacquer. Many ranges are also available in custom colours — simply select your RAL or NCS code at product level, or contact the team for bespoke requirements.
Completing Your Installation
A column radiator is only complete with the right accessories. Most customers pair their radiators with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) for precise room-by-room temperature control. For technical advice on valve types and pipework configurations, see our guide to radiator valves.
For rooms with unusual wall configurations or a freestanding aesthetic, selected ranges including the Nordic Oslo and Apollo Roma are available with optional floor feet, removing the need for wall fixings entirely. See our column radiators with feet for available options.
Are column radiators efficient?
Yes. The multi-column design creates a large surface area that radiates heat evenly into the room, and the natural convection between columns means warmth is distributed without the need for a fan or blower. Modern column radiators are designed to work with low-temperature central heating systems, making them fully compatible with heat pumps and condensing boilers running at lower flow temperatures than older systems.
How do I choose the right size column radiator?
Start with your room's required BTU output — use our BTU calculator to calculate this based on room dimensions, ceiling height, insulation level, and the number of external walls and windows. Once you know the output required, use the filters on this page to narrow by height, width and column count to find a radiator that fits your space and delivers the heat you need.
Can column radiators be painted?
Many of our column radiator ranges are available in custom colours to order. If you need a specific RAL or NCS colour, contact the team and we can advise on availability for each range. We do not recommend painting standard radiators after purchase, as this can affect the quality of the finish and in some cases void the product guarantee.
Can column radiators be used in a bathroom?
Some column radiator ranges include towel radiator options with towel bars or robe hooks, designed for bathroom use. If you want to maintain a consistent look across your whole home, it is worth considering this at the planning stage. See our towel radiators range for suitable options.
