Pipe Centre FAQs
What are radiator pipe centres?

Radiator pipe centres are the distance between the centre points of the inlet and outlet pipes that connect to a radiator. This measurement determines compatibility with existing pipework and affects installation and efficiency.

How do I measure radiator pipe centres accurately?

Turn off and cool the system, locate the inlet and outlet pipes, then measure from the centre of one pipe to the centre of the other with a rigid tape or laser.

Do radiator widths match pipe centres by default?

No. Width doesn’t equal pipe centres, and setups can vary. It is worth noting that the pipe centre value we quote is taking in to account, valves of 40mm fitted to each side. Also double check measurements.

What happens if I buy a radiator that doesn’t match my pipe centres?

Not to fear you may just need matching radiator tail extensions ↗ to make up the difference. Worst case you might need to do some pipework changes which is mostly straight forward.

Can I search radiators by my pipe centre measurement?

Yes, use the pipe centre measurement widget at the top of this page to narrow results to compatible products:

Is there a UK standard for radiator pipe centres?

There’s no fixed standard for pipe centres. While many parts are standard sizes, like 15mm radiator valve ↗ pipe centres vary by make and installation, so measuring is essential.

Can I install a new radiator without altering existing pipework?

If the new radiator’s pipe centres match your existing pipe centres (including valve space), you can typically avoid modifications.  Remember you can always use radiator valve extensions ↗ to increase the width of the radiator pipe centres.

Are accurate pipe centres important for efficiency?

Proper alignment supports optimal water flow and heat distribution, improving radiator performance and room comfort.

Enter your pipe centre measurement in millimetres.

We’ll show radiators where the quoted pipe centres (including 40 mm valves each side) are up to 60 mm less than your measurement (up to 30 mm per side). Tail extensions are available in 10, 20 and 30 mm in all finishes , and 40 / 50 mm in chrome, which can help make up small differences.
