Checklist for installation of heat producing gas appliances

If a heat-producing gas appliance (e.g. a boiler, a fire, a water heater etc..) is installed in England or Wales, under the terms of the Building Regulations, the installation must be reported and registered with the relevant local authority within 30 days of the work being carried out. The easiest way for an installer to do this is by using the Gas Safe Register’s online reporting system. All that needs to be done to report an installation is to log onto the website with your User ID and password and enter the details. It costs £2.50 (+VAT) per gas appliance and you can register up to 6 appliances per address. This is the cheapest and easiest way to register an installation, though you can also call up the technical helpline on 0800 408 5577 and register, which costs £3.50 (+VAT). Registering your work with the Gas Safe Register means you do not have to go through the process of registering with the local authorities as they will do that for you. A Building Regulations Compliance Certificate will also be issued to certify that the work has been completed by someone who has the necessary qualifications and is a registered ‘gas safe’ engineer. This is not a legal requirement in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but installers are encouraged to record and register their work so that a Declaration of Safety certificate can be issued. Any work of the following type needs to be registered, if carried out within England or Wales: Installing/Replacing: - Heating and hot water boilers - Water heaters or circulators - Warm air heaters - Independent space heaters - Micro co-generation appliances - Cooker boilers and flued cookers - Vented and unvented hot water storage vessels - Installing or replacing an entire heating system - Replacing parts or adding parts to an existing heating system which alters performance of the boiler. - Installing or replacing flue systems or liners The customer details you need to include when registering the work are: - Customer name and full address - Date of completion - Installing engineer’s name and address - Certification delivery address - Full details of the application - model, version, brand/manufacturer - Location of the installed appliance - Work category of the appliance It’s worth noting that you should not register any gas work that has not been completed by yourself as this is illegal and can cause you to be fined.
